Artist Statement

My ongoing series focuses on body image liberation. Through my prints and paintings, I explore the complexities of societal expectations and beauty standards. Having my body being the main focus in uncomfortable ways enables me and the viewers to wholeheartedly embrace and appreciate diverse bodies, celebrating the beauty of individuality. I hope to challenge the oppressive standards that often dictate how we perceive ourselves and others. With my paintings, it is my way of promoting self-acceptance and embracing the uniqueness of each person’s body.

I primarily use oil and acrylic paints because I find it to be the most visually satisfying way to replicate skin on the human body and I have felt most comfortable with color mixing for flesh-tones. In addition to using paints to explore notions of the body, skin and surfaces I experiment with materials, such as: wax medium that is mixable with oil paint creating a thicker medium, accentuating facial scarring.

My artwork also addresses the concept of emotional realities. By incorporating various colors into my lithographs, I aim to convey the depth and intensity of different emotions - the joy, the pain, and everything in between. Each piece becomes a reflection of my own experiences, as well as a means of connecting with others who may resonate with these emotional journeys.

Starting my printmaking journey is a new addition to my artistic practice as it allows me to channel my thoughts and emotions into tangible artworks that speak to topics of mental health, emotional realities, and body image liberation. I have a new found love for the process of lithographs and through my ongoing series, I strive to share my experiences and create a space for conversations surrounding these important subjects.
